Student nurses ‘mercy mission’ raises £3000
Student Nurses from the West Middlesex University Hospital have raised a massive £3000 to help children with heart problems in Sri Lanka.
The team of 20 students, who study at New Bucks University and train at West Mid, took part in a variety of activities including a fun run dressed as Santa Claus, (in the rain) in Greenwich Park. They were joined in the fundraising by the Endoscopy Unit at the hospital, who held a raffle over Christmas.
The charity is in its eighth year of sending a team, made up of doctors and nurses to Sri Lanka, where they perform life saving heart surgery on children. Since 2002, the charity has performed 104 operations across the country.
Clinical Quality Facilitator Tina Jones, who introduced the students to the charity and helped with the fundraising said, “We are so proud of the hard work and the huge amount of cash the team have raised in such a small period of time.”
Jai Lameer, Coordinator from the “Guy’s (Paediatric Cardiac) Surgery Mercy Mission to Sri Lanka” added “we are extremely grateful to the student nurses and this money will make a huge difference to the lives of many children”.
